Health Camp at Borstal Jail Faisalabad on 3.11.2008

"The World Diabetes Day logo is the blue circle - the global symbol for diabetes which was developed as part of the Unite for Diabetes awareness campaign. The logo was adopted in 2007 to mark the passage of the United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution. The significance of the blue circle symbol is overwhelmingly positive. Across cultures, the circle symbolizes life and health. The color blue reflects the sky that unites all nations and is the color of the United Nations flag.
The blue circle signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes pandemic."

The province of Punjab has two borstal jails which are working in accordance with the children's rights chartered by United Nations. One is in the city of Bahawalpur & the other in city of Faisalabad.

Total number of child prisoners in Faisalabad Borstal jail is 172 & they range from 13 years to 20 years of age. To screen them out for different diseases, emed & All Pakistan Diabetes & Endocrine Society arranged a health camp on 3.11.2008 where tests of the bone strength (BMD), Calcium calculation, other minerals calculation, BMI & specialist health advice was arranged.

After screening of about 100 children some very interesting & horrifying facts were revealed. 100% children were deficient in calcium, magnesium & Vit K-2. 70% children had osteopenia & 10% had developed osteoporosis.

One child named Rizwan Ahmad from Jaranwala had cardiac valvular disease (mitral regurgitation). The jail authorities were informed that his life was seriously endangered. They told that he would be releasing out of jail soon. The doctors gave him the address of Medical Unit-III Allied hospital & was suggested to come & meet Prof Ahmad Bilal when he gets out of jail.

Jail staff members also availed the test facilities. More than 50% staff members were over weight with excessive amount of visceral fat.

From emed & All Pakistan Diabetes & Endocrine Society, Dr Khurram Sohail Raja, Dr Mohammad Waqas, Dr Mohammad Ayub, Dr Tehseen ul Amin & Dr Adnan Maqsood attended the camp.

From jail authorities, Yousaf Mufti, Ch Mohammad Nawaz (EDO Community Development) & Dr Shahid fully cooperated with emed

Note:

It was very heartening to know that DIG Police Faisalabad took serious note of the results of the tests done on the children prisoners of the Borstal jail & initiated an enquiry in the matter with a show cause notice to the doctor posted in the jail.

The jail authorities were not very happy on organizing such camp & contacted emed to help them out of the problem. On behalf of emed, Dr Khurram Raja told the authorities that camp was organized in a good sense & there was no intention to create any problem for the authorities. Dr Khurram Raja stood on the results of the tests as all the data was computerized & available as evidence any time for any one.

It was very nice to know that milk supply is started for the children of the jail & their diet plans are getting revised.
