Introductory Session:

 World Tuberculosis Day, held annually on 24 March, commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch presented his discovery of the TB bacillus to a group of doctors in Berlin. This year, World TB Day focused on the efforts of frontline TB care providers and their crucial role in stopping TB. Slogan for 2008 was:

“I AM Stopping TB“

In Faisalabad, the biggest TB Day celebration was arranged by emed when its HEAL dramatics launched their 1st performance. The young dramatic society under the charge of zealous Dr Humaira Arshad captivated the hearts of Punjab Medical College undergraduates & on the other hand, teachers termed the occasion as best ever programme arranged in the medical college for the spread of a health message.

On Wednesday March 26th 2008, the medical undergraduates of the Punjab Medical College started pouring in the auditorium in the early morning & proceedings of the programme started exactly at 9:00 a.m. with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Principal Punjab Medical College, Prof Asghar Ali Randhawa. After tilawat from Holy Quran, Hamd sharif & a Naat sharif, Head of Chest Department, DHQ Hospital Faisalabad, Prof Altafat Sultan presented the running scenario of TB cases in Pakistan. He stressed upon the need of educating the people & to stress upon the prevention of the disease.

General Secretary emed, Assistant Professor Dr Khurram Sohail Raja introduced HEAL to the audience. He said that talent of our young generations need to be channelized in a positive direction & health promotion & creating health awareness can provide the best base. He appreciated the support of Prof Ahmad Bilal, hard work done by Dr Humaira Arshad on the idea of HEAL & above all the help, support & approval by the Principal Punjab Medical College, Prof Asghar Randhawa. He said that guidelines & a continuous support by the teachers of the teachers, Prof Mohammad Saeed & Prof Mrs Tasneem Cheema is the real strength behind the success of emed. He announced that emed will establish HEAL branches in the educational institutions of the city & there will be an all city competition among all the HEAL branches on some health message in January 2009, Insha Allah.

The function was well attended by the PMC medical undergraduates of all classes, emed groups from various institutions, Head of Urology Department Prof Zahid Iqbal, Head of Medicine Department Prof Abdul Hafeez Chaudhry, Head of Physiology Department Prof Mrs Tasneem Cheema, Head of Medical Unit-IV Prof Mohammad Ashraf, Head of Forensic Medicine Prof Ahmad Saeed, Head of Pharmacology Prof Naeem Iqbal, Head of Community Medicine Dr Farida Manzoor, Head of Oncology Dr Ijaz Shah, Officiating Head of Anatomy Dr Capt Saif, Dr Qaiser Mehmood from Pathology, Dr Riaz Hassan from Pharmacology, all doctors from Medical Unit-III, doctors from Chest Department DHQ, Dr Kaneez Fatima from Forensic Medicine, Dr Tayyaba from Biochemistry, emed teachers including Dr Mohammad Aslam, Dr Hina Ayesha, Dr Najaf Gill, Additional Medical Superintendent DHQ Hospital Dr Cap Mumtaz, Personal Staff Officers to the Principal Dr Abdul Aziz & Dr Ikhlaq Ahmad and representatives of print & electronic media.

 

Performances:

 

"4th year Punjab Medical College justified their selection of HEAL project & Waleed Haider with his team did a commendable job"

"The efforts of 3rd year class were matchless & they showed best team performance. Their skit 'Heal the World' was widely appreciated by the audience"

"The lady from the department of Forensic Medicine, Dr Humaira Arshad,  worked very hard right from the idea of HEAL to the interviews of the applicants to the final arrangements of TB Day 2008"

"Young artists were confident, zealous, determined & showed promise to take HEAL to new heights in the future"

"Many of the folk stories as heer-ranjha, laila majnu & saleem-anakali were used to spread awareness message in more understandable way"

"Among other impressive performances, General Secretary HEAL, Usman showed great versatility in performances & various get-ups"

 

When stage was handed over to the HEAL artists, they kept the audience in trance with their able performances the credit of which goes to their officials comprising Waleed Haider (President), Saira Fayyaz (Vice President), Usman Arshad & Akash Ashraf (General Secretaries) and all class coordinators of HEAL.

Theme of World TB Day was appreciated a lot & it was chiefly designed by Omer Afzal & Sidra Parveen. Various skits, poems, songs & qawalis were all based on various aspects of prevention & awareness about tuberculosis & all the teams working on them from final year to 1st year worked day & night to meet a thunderous success.

Young compeers played their part in giving details about the disease & introducing the items & were appreciated by the audience. The interest in the skits was kept alive by laying them in lines of traditional folk stories & cultural outfits.

The posters specially made for the occasion were displayed on the stage for general view & audience appreciated them.
